Sneaky Dutch

Fun fact of the day: Carrots weren't always orange.

Back before the seventeen hundreds, carrots were most commonly yellow, white, or purple. However, one day Dutch plant breeders got the crafty idea to breed carrots orange in honor of Holland's royal family. The color stuck.

Perhaps you're now wondering why Holland has such an affinity for the color orange when their flag colors are red white and blue. Perhaps you had already pondered this question as you watched Dutch Olympians fly past decked in orange suits, contrasting their little red white and blue flag at the bottom of the screen. And now to learn that carrots are only orange because of the Dutch? Its just to much to comprehend.

Turns out orange is the color of the royal family. And thats all there is to it.

So every time you pick up some orange carrots, just know that you are reaping the fruits of the hard work of a handful of patriotic plant breeders.
